1 – What made you choose CBE as your EPoS supplier?

Liam Byrne and Sean Kenna are consummate professionals; they demonstrated quickly they understood food retail. Every question I asked them, I got the correct answer in reply.

2 – What are the main trends you are observing within your industry?

Better fresh food offerings, a hunger for improved efficiencies (by retailers), and more discerning consumers.

3 – Can you describe what a typical working day looks like for you?

There’s no typical day, but I like to get set up early, do a floor walk, listen and chat with employees. Chat with customers, deal with correspondence and future planning.

4 – What do you love about your job?

See the above answer! No two days are the same.

5 – What do you feel is your greatest strength?

Problem-solving ability. With over 30 years in the trade, there are not too many situations that I haven’t encountered!

6 – How do you think your employees would describe you?

“Derek hates to see queues”

7 – What job role within your company would you be terrible at?

It would have to be the bakery, I am constantly amazed at the creations our people produce daily. I would probably mess up the cash office too!

8 – What is the most heartwarming thing you have ever seen an employee do for a customer?

I have witnessed many kind gestures over the years. I know an employee that has driven a customer home to get his spare car keys around eight times (he’s a bit forgetful) after he locked them into his old Toyota!

9 – How do you relax after a hard day at work?

I go to work for a break! I am a dad to Oscar and Pippa, 10 and 8 years of age, so they keep me busy when I get home.

10 – Finally, if you could have lunch with one person, who would it be, and why?

Brendan Behan a great Dubliner. I would need to take the rest of the day off, as I suppose it would be a liquid lunch!
